‘Wainwright’ by W. R. Mitchell
Alfred Wainwright (1907-91)
bestrode the lonely fells of the Lake District, making notes and taking
photographs that became the raw material for a series of remarkable
Pictorial Guides. A perfectionist, he ensured that each page – art work
and text – was complete, printed without the addition of a single line
of type. Wainwright became a household name, largely through television
programmes, This slim, well-illustrated book is anecdotal rather than biographical, with snippets of interest to Wainwright fans.

'Lake District In The Past' Narrated by W.R. Mitchell M.B.E.
A rare look at this wonderful area through colour film from the 1940s and 50s, plus some early 1930s footage of village life. We also view the colourful rushbearing procession in Ambleside in the 1950s and such things as sheep shearing - the hard way.
The colour footage was taken by two film-makers living in Yorkshire who, like many, would go to the Lakes for that annual holiday or for an adventurous walk on the fells. Charles Chislett lived in Rotherham for many years and was well known for his travelogue-style productions. He took very early colour footage of the Lakeland area, during the Second World War in fact. His 16mm cine film is exceptional. We end this DVD production with a seventeen minute colour film from the 1950s shot by Fred Brackenbury of Harrogate. His professional photographic style captures some wonderful scenes on the Lakes and in the hills.
So join us in or nostalgic look around one of England's most favourite haunts and see life as it used to be. |
